Maplewood Native Bruce Eric Kaplan to Receive Prestigious Literary Honor

Maplewood Celebrates a Hometown Creative Talent with a Night of Inspiration, Storytelling, and Community Pride

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Maplewood Memorial Library is preparing to celebrate one of its own. Maplewood native Bruce Eric Kaplan—widely known for his unforgettable cartoons, television work, and bestselling books—has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Maplewood Literary Award, one of the community’s highest honors.

Kaplan will be recognized during a special ceremony on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Maplewood Memorial Library as part of the annual Ideas Festival, Maplewood’s signature celebration of creativity, talent, and innovation. The festival highlights accomplished artists, writers, and thinkers with local ties and honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in their fields.

For many fans, Bruce Eric Kaplan may be best known as a longtime cartoonist for the New Yorker, where his unique and thoughtful humor has appeared regularly for more than three decades. His cartoons have entertained readers across the country and led to several published collections, including No One You Know, This is a Bad Time, and I Love You, I Hate You, I’m Hungry.

Kaplan’s creative work extends far beyond cartoons. In television, he has helped shape beloved and award-winning shows including Seinfeld, Six Feet Under, and Girls. He currently serves as Executive Producer and Co-Showrunner for Nobody Wants This, continuing a career that spans multiple generations of storytelling.

He has also authored numerous books for adults and children. His children’s book Monsters Eat Whiny Children became an instant bestseller and remains a favorite among readers. Kaplan has also written acclaimed memoirs and illustrated works that showcase his signature blend of humor, honesty, and creativity.
