MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Maplewood Memorial Library is preparing to celebrate one of its own. Maplewood native Bruce Eric Kaplan—widely known for his unforgettable cartoons, television work, and bestselling books—has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Maplewood Literary Award, one of the community’s highest honors.

Kaplan will be recognized during a special ceremony on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Maplewood Memorial Library as part of the annual Ideas Festival, Maplewood’s signature celebration of creativity, talent, and innovation. The festival highlights accomplished artists, writers, and thinkers with local ties and honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in their fields.

For many fans, Bruce Eric Kaplan may be best known as a longtime cartoonist for the New Yorker, where his unique and thoughtful humor has appeared regularly for more than three decades.
