Winter Storm Preparedness in Maplewood and South Orange: State of Emergency Declared
🔥 Trending

Maplewood and South Orange have declared a state of emergency as a major winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and hazardous conditions Sunday through Monday.

Maplewood crews are ready with 30 staff, a fleet of plows, and a large salt supply, beginning snow removal early Sunday. Residents should expect repeated driveway blockage from ongoing plowing.

Overnight on-street parking is suspended between 2:00 am and 6:00 am both days, and all vehicles must be off snow-covered roads until fully cleared.

Residents are required to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall ending and must shovel a three-foot radius around fire hydrants.

South Orange bans street parking from Saturday evening to midday Monday, directing vehicles to municipal lots and warning against parking in school lots.

Sidewalks must be cleared promptly—12 daylight hours for homes, 4 for businesses—and snow cannot be thrown onto roads.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, monitor local alerts, check on neighbors, and report emergencies or outages as needed for safety during the storm.

Maplewood Seeks to Finalize Affordable Housing Plan Amid Legal Challenges

Maplewood is progressing toward its Fourth Round Housing Element and Fair Share Plan, aiming to add 216 new affordable homes by 2035.

The township faces pressure to resolve legal disputes with a developer and the Fair Share Housing Center before the critical March 15 deadline.

Recently, the Planning Board voted 7-1 against expanding the Movie Theater Redevelopment Area to include 11 Inwood Place, with Mayor Vic De Luca as the lone supporter.

This decision forced Maplewood to submit an amended plan, reducing a proposed development from 65 to 50 units.

Efforts to negotiate with developer 161 Maplewood Investors, LLC have been promising, but both sides now seek a 90-day extension to finalize a new agreement.

The Fair Share Housing Center supports this move.

Leaders urge residents to engage in the process as Maplewood remains focused on meeting its obligation and supporting local affordable housing.

South Orange Enhances Crosswalk Safety with Vibrant Turtle-Themed Designs

South Orange has introduced vibrant, turtle-themed crosswalks on Mead Street, designed to boost pedestrian safety and highlight local wildlife.

This creative initiative is a collaboration among Walk Bike Ride South Orange, Meadowland Park Conservancy, and South Orange Village, with support from a 2025 AARP Community Challenge grant.

During South Orange Community Day in September, volunteers painted bold pink turtles at Mead Street and Meadowbrook Lane, drawing attention to native box turtles and snapping turtles that share the neighborhood.

Beyond striking crosswalk art, the project improved bike lanes with fresh green paint and installed new delineators to aid in traffic safety and flow for everyone, including families, older adults, and visitors to Meadowland Park and the Baird Community Center.

Research shows that asphalt art like this can decrease pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, building a safer and more vibrant community.

Maplewood Township Committee Declares ICE 'Not Welcome' Following Minneapolis Shooting

The Maplewood Township Committee has firmly opposed the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the community, declaring that ICE is not welcome in Maplewood.

This response follows the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three and U.S. citizen, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis—a tragic event that has fueled national debate on immigration enforcement.

Mayor Victor De Luca, Deputy Mayor Malia Herman, and the committee extended condolences to Good’s family, demanding a full and transparent investigation and emphasizing the need for accountability.

They criticized militarized raids under the Trump Administration, arguing such tactics destabilize neighborhoods and heighten fear, rather than improve safety.

Reaffirming Maplewood’s longstanding commitment to dignity and equality, officials referenced local policies preventing township staff from enforcing federal immigration laws unless required by courts or state orders.

The Maplewood Police Department upholds strict limits on questioning or arresting based on immigration status, following New Jersey’s Attorney General guidelines.

Officials vowed to defend constitutional rights and urged residents to choose compassion, truth, and dignity in the face of division.
