Community food access is evolving in Maplewood, New Jersey, with new collaborations and programs aimed at making a real difference for families.

Recently, the Maplewood Health Department teamed up with Camp Prospect to bring fresh energy to local food distribution efforts and deliver much-needed children's book donations to families in need.

Maplewood social worker Dina Pressel paid a special visit to the summer camp at Prospect Church, gathering hundreds of children's books and sharing stories with preschoolers.

The children's laughter mixed with a sense of purpose as they listened to heartfelt readings about kindness and emotions.

Director Sara Knutsen explained that their summer camp embraces outreach as a core value, making charity part of the learning experience for children as young as two.

Such efforts now support the newly launched Community Food Access + hub on Boyden Avenue, the latest step for Maplewood in battling food insecurity while also nurturing young minds.

Unlike the old Community Fridge, the new center offers an inviting, air-conditioned place for residents to gather, connect, and choose food with dignity.

According to recent reports, families no longer need to wait outdoors for hours regardless of the weather, a critical improvement as summer temperatures rise.

There’s an added bonus: each visitor can select books for children to take home — fueling both bodies and imaginations.

Pressel notes one hurdle remains: making it easier for neighbors to donate food directly.

At present, a vendor based outside of town coordinates distribution, leaving locals eager for a simpler giving option.

Despite this, the emotional impact and sense of community at the new hub are unmistakable.

Outreach materials, information on free meal programs, and personal interaction with staff help families feel welcome and supported.

The initiative is expected to grow, with a year-round push to collect more children's and teen books — a reflection of the town's ongoing commitment to the next generation.
