Expanding student lunch space through the CHS courtyard renovation in Maplewood

In Maplewood, the school courtyard renovation at Columbia High School begins with a familiar problem: finding enough room for students to eat lunch comfortably.

On pleasant days, an outdoor table could offer more than a seat; it could give teenagers a welcome pause from crowded indoor spaces.

The CHS Cougar Boosters are working to turn an overgrown, little-used courtyard into a practical gathering spot for the school community.

Their immediate priority is additional student lunch space when the weather cooperates, not a replacement for indoor dining.

Volunteers have already cleared vegetation, pruned trees and pulled weeds, giving the neglected area a first round of attention.

Next steps call for removing an old pond, laying gravel or pebble ground cover, and installing tables and seats.

Those changes sound simple, but for students squeezed into busy lunch periods, breathing room matters.

The courtyard’s connection to the school auditorium also opens possibilities beyond the midday rush.

Families could gather there during intermissions at musicals or concerts, while teachers and school groups might use it for other events.

For Maplewood families, the appeal is easy to grasp: a place that makes an ordinary school day feel a little less cramped.

The Boosters previously refreshed staff lounges, and the courtyard extends their focus from interiors to shared outdoor space.

This time, students stand to benefit directly from a more usable place to sit and reconnect.

Community contributions would help cover materials, seating and supplies, with fundraising efforts supporting the work.

The timeline remains uncertain while funding and improvements are still needed.

Still, the goal is refreshingly grounded: reclaim a neglected corner of Columbia High School for everyday use.

If the project succeeds, the Maplewood courtyard could become a small but meaningful answer to a daily space problem.
