Jonathan Tiersten tributes in Maplewood Shout Outs

The MapleMaplewood reflectswood community is mourning the loss of Jonathan Tiersten, the beloved Maplewood tennis director and dedicated member of Maplewood ComTiersten's contributionsmunity Services. Tiersten, who passed away at his Maplewood residence in late April at the age of 60, left an indelible mark on the local tennis scene and beyond.

 

At the May 5 Maplewood Township Committee meeting, Missi Mancuso, Director of Community Services, led a heartfelt tribute. She highlighted Tiersten's journey from tennis instructor to director since joining the department in 2019. Mancuso emphasized his philosophy that "focus is fun and fun is focus," which resonated with athletes of all ages.

 

Tiersten's presence on the Maplewood courts during spring, summer, and fall was marked by his open heart, kind spirit, and genuine love for the game. While many recognized him for his role as Ricky Thomas in the 1983 horror classic "Sleepaway Camp," in Maplewood, he was cherished as a colleague, coach, friend, and proud father to his 19-year-old son.

 

The community's outpouring of grief underscores the profound impact Tiersten had on those around him. His dedication to fostering a love for tennis and his unwavering support for his students have left a lasting legacy.
