Heroic efforts in frigid conditions save lives and pets |
In the early hours of February 2, 2026, a devastating fire erupted on Gifford Court in Maplewood, New Jersey.
Braving the bone-chilling 4-degree windchill, the South Essex Fire Department responded swiftly to the emergency.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with intense flames and reports of a resident trapped inside.
Without hesitation, Squad 32 entered the burning home and successfully rescued the individual, who was found conscious and breathing.
Additionally, two dogs were saved from the inferno.
Fire Chief Joseph Alvarez praised the team's decisive actions, stating, "Without question, their decision to immediately commit their company to making the rescue and the swift action they took are the reasons a resident of our town is alive today."
Captain Keith Scheper, who carried the resident to safety, sustained minor injuries but is reported to be doing well.
The fire was brought under control after two hours of intense effort.
The American Red Cross is assisting eight individuals from three families displaced by the fire, providing temporary lodging, food, and clothing.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
