Highlighting the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and a thriving creative scene |
Nette Forné Thomas, a distinguished artist from Maplewood, has been honored with a 2026 Individual Artist Fellowship by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
This prestigious award recognizes her exceptional contributions to the arts and aims to support her ongoing creative endeavors.
Thomas's artistic journey began in her early childhood, where she displayed a natural talent for drawing.
Growing up in Belleville, she often found herself as the only Black student in her classes, yet her artistic abilities fostered connections and friendships.
She recalls, "I would draw characters from comic books, and I never felt isolated because of my artistic accomplishments."
Her work primarily focuses on mixed media, with a particular fascination for the human form.
During her studies at Pratt Institute, Thomas embraced the challenge of depicting the human figure, both clothed and nude.
She developed a distinctive technique that mimics the appearance of lace by etching into Plexiglas overlays on her paintings, creating a signature style that sets her work apart.
Beyond her personal artistry, Thomas is deeply involved in the local art scene.
As a curator at the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center, she has been instrumental in organizing Black History Month exhibitions, bringing renowned Black artists to the community.
Reflecting on her long-standing residence in Maplewood, she notes, "The arts and atmosphere here are so welcoming; there's no reason to leave."
For aspiring artists, Thomas advises, "Find what you really enjoy doing and keep doing it. Make it known and seen on the local level, and look into state competitions."
Her dedication and passion continue to inspire the Maplewood art community, fostering a vibrant and inclusive creative environment. |
