library renovation and maplewood memorial library featured in the newly reimagined civic space |
The Maplewood Memorial Library at 51 Baker Street in Maplewood, New Jersey, has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a 32,000-square-foot, all-electric civic space that is 33% larger than its predecessor.
This expansion includes the addition of a second floor, enhancing the library's capacity to serve the community.
Notably, it stands as the first LEED Gold-certified public library in New Jersey, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The $24 million project was funded through a combination of state, local, and private contributions.
The state provided $8.3 million via the Library Construction Bond Act, while the municipality contributed $12 million, exceeding the required 50% match.
Additionally, the Maplewood Library Foundation raised over $2 million from generous donors.
Rooted in equity and transparency, the design welcomes all through a restored 1955 entrance that visually connects Baker Street to the adjacent Maplewood Memorial Park, originally designed by the Olmsted firm.
An elevated ramp on the park side ensures equal access for everyone, eliminating the need for stairs or separate entries.
The building embodies a civic choice in every element, reflecting the community's values.
The library promotes active engagement with light-filled stairways, open circulation, and dynamic spaces that encourage movement and discovery.
It is truly built for books, featuring reading nooks, ash wood floors reminiscent of rough-cut pages, and windows that open like the leaves of a book.
A fully glazed second-floor reading room overlooks the park, with a frit that limits solar gain and protects birds by depicting local flora and fauna.
Outdoor features include a reading terrace with Adirondack chairs and seating along glass walls, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors and creating a treehouse-like atmosphere, especially appealing to birdwatchers.
This design corrects previous layouts that walled off the park, enhancing the library's role within the larger civic landscape.
The library offers flexible, purpose-built spaces such as a Teen Room with floor-to-ceiling windows providing commanding park views, a Children's Room designed to invite discovery, and a Community Room with a 200-person capacity and a separate entrance for independent after-hours operation.
Additional features include a Maker Space equipped with 3D printers and workbenches, a Local History Room with historic resources and boardroom seating, a Forum with stepped seating connecting the first and second floors for informal events, and ten Quiet Study Rooms available for individuals or small groups seeking private space to read, study, or work.
Sustainability and resilience are at the forefront of the design.
Solar panels offset 58% of energy use, mechanical systems are elevated to prevent flood damage, and planted roofs manage stormwater.
Materials from the original structure were preserved where possible, windows are bird-safe, and native landscaping supports biodiversity.
From wooden trusses honoring the original architecture to signature windows framing park views like living paintings, every inch of the library is purpose-built, community-centered, and future-ready.
Since its reopening in July 2025, the library has hosted significant events, including the 12th annual Ideas Festival from March 12 through 28, 2026, celebrating Maplewood's diverse talent and creativity.
In January 2026, the library unveiled its LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing it as a regional showcase of sustainability and a leader in transforming the building industry.
