South Orange Enhances Crosswalk Safety with Vibrant Turtle-Themed Designs |
Mead Street's new crosswalks aim to protect pedestrians and local wildlife |
South Orange has recently unveiled a series of artistically designed crosswalks on Mead Street, featuring vibrant turtle motifs to enhance pedestrian safety and raise awareness about local wildlife.
These eye-catching crosswalks are part of a collaborative effort between Walk Bike Ride South Orange, the Meadowland Park Conservancy, and the South Orange Village. The project was partially funded by a 2025 AARP Community Challenge grant, aiming to create safer and more engaging pedestrian pathways.
During the South Orange Community Day in September, volunteers painted hot pink turtles on the crosswalks at Mead Street and Meadowbrook Lane. This design choice highlights the presence of native box turtles and common snapping turtles in the area, emphasizing the need for safe crossings for both humans and wildlife.
In addition to the artistic crosswalks, the project included the application of green paint to bike lanes and the installation of delineators to improve traffic flow and safety. These enhancements are designed to make Mead Street safer for all users, including older adults, families, and visitors to Meadowland Park and the Baird Community Center.
Research indicates that such asphalt art can reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and crashes, contributing to a safer and more vibrant community environment.
As Orange South continues to prioritize pedestrian safety, residents can look forward to more innovative projects that blend functionality with community engagement. |
