South Orange-Maplewood School District Updates in Maplewood Shout Outs

The South Orange-Maplewood School District has released its proposed budget for the 2026-2027 academic year, totaling approximately $200 million.

 

This budget includes the elimination of 23 full-time positions, primarily through attrition, with five positions subject to reductions in force.

 

Additionally, the budget proposes a 6% increase in the local tax levy, exceeding the standard 2% cap due to allowable exceptions for rising healthcare costs and increased student enrollment.

 

At the April 23 Board of Education meeting, Board member Meredith Higgins emphasized the need for greater transparency in the budget process.

 

She highlighted the importance of making committees, such as the Budget Action Committee, more accessible to non-elected citizens.

 

Finance Chair  Malini Nayar expressed concerns about the compressed timeline for budget development and advocated for a standardized process to ensure clarity and consistency in future budget cycles.

 

The district is also experiencing leadership changes, with Business Administrator Imani Moody on personal leave and having tendered his resignation, effective July 1.

 

Interim Business Administrator Frank Ceurvels has stepped in to oversee the completion of the budget process.

 

The Board of Education is scheduled to hold a public hearing and final vote on the budget on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the District Meeting Room at 525 Academy Street, Maplewood, NJ.
