Storm damage and recovery in Maplewood Shout Outs

Updates on power outages and Maplewood storm response

A fast-moving storm swept through parts of New Jersey, including Maplewood and South Orange, on Friday evening, July 3, causing power outages, property damage, and hazardous driving conditions due to fallen trees and large branches.

As of July 5, PSE&G crews have restored power to approximately 275,000 customers, with about 22,000 still without electricity. The storm damaged approximately 255 transformers and 240 utility poles across the state. Restoration efforts are ongoing, with crews working around the clock to address the remaining outages.

South Essex Fire Chief Joseph Alvarez reported that the department responded to 44 calls on Friday night across both towns. Crews attended to incidents involving trees falling onto houses and cars, downed poles with burning wires, and two lightning strikes.

The damage appeared more severe in South Orange than in Maplewood, with trees reported down in the historic Montrose neighborhood and a higher number of outages throughout the Village.

South Orange Village Councilwoman Hannah Zollman experienced significant personal loss, including damage to her car, fence, and pergola. A second family car is trapped in the garage due to a downed tree bending the garage door. Zollman has canceled her 4th of July plans but stated, "We are physically safe. Thank goodness for insurance."

In the aftermath of the storm, residents witnessed a fiery sunset and a stunning double rainbow, offering a moment of beauty amid the destruction.

Governor Mikie Sherrill has activated the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management to assist communities across the state with severe weather conditions, including substantial flooding. The State Emergency Operations Center remains fully operational to coordinate the response.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and to exercise caution during cleanup efforts. The community's resilience and cooperation are vital as recovery continues.
