Recognizing transgender day of visibility and addressing transgender discrimination |
The South Orange Village Council has officially declared March 31, 2026, as Transgender Day of Visibility, underscoring the community's commitment to inclusivity and support for transgender and non-binary individuals.
Mayor Sheena Collum emphasized the importance of this proclamation, stating that every transgender and non-binary resident, especially young people, should know they are valued, loved, and belong in South Orange.
The proclamation highlights that dignity, safety, and equality are fundamental values of the community, and that diversity strengthens South Orange.
Residents are encouraged to celebrate the lives and contributions of transgender and non-binary people, stand against discrimination and misinformation, and work together to ensure that every community member can live openly, safely, and with dignity.
Transgender Day of Visibility, first recognized in 2009, celebrates the lives, contributions, and resilience of transgender and non-binary people while raising awareness of the challenges many continue to face.
In 2026, numerous legislative proposals across the country seek to restrict access to gender-affirming healthcare, limit the rights of transgender students in schools, and prevent individuals from updating identity documents, actions that increase the risk of harassment, discrimination, and violence.
Transgender people, particularly Black and Brown transgender women, experience disproportionate rates of poverty, unemployment, housing instability, and barriers to healthcare, while rising misinformation and online harassment fuel harmful narratives that undermine their dignity, safety, and humanity.
By proclaiming March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, South Orange affirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals can thrive.
Residents are invited to participate in events and activities that honor the transgender and non-binary community, promote understanding, and advocate for equal rights and protections for all. |
