As a significant winter storm approaches, both Maplewood and South Orange have declared a state of emergency to ensure resident safety. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions from early Sunday through Monday evening.

In Maplewood, the Department of Public Works is fully prepared with a team of 30 employees, equipped with 9 dump trucks, 25 plow trucks, and 3 tractors dedicated to clearing paths and sidewalks. The township has a substantial stockpile of 500 tons of salt to combat icy conditions. Snow removal operations are set to commence in the early hours of Sunday and will continue throughout the storm's duration. Residents should be aware that driveway aprons may be impacted multiple times due to repeated plowing.

Parking restrictions are in effect, prohibiting overnight on-street parking between 2:00 am and 6:00 am on both Sunday and Monday. This restriction applies to all vehicles, including those with overnight parking permits. Once streets are snow-covered, parking is prohibited until roadways are fully cleared. Residents are urged to consult the Township Code for a list of affected streets.

Sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after the snowfall ends. It's important to use sand or salt on any remaining ice that cannot be removed. Additionally, residents are required to clear a 3-foot radius around fire hydrants on their property to ensure accessibility for emergency services.

In South Orange, on-street parking is prohibited from 6:00 PM Saturday until 12:00 PM Monday. Residents must relocate their vehicles to municipal parking lots or the Third & Valley Garage to avoid ticketing and towing. Parking in school lots is not permitted, as they are not municipal facilities.

Travel during the storm is strongly discouraged. If driving is unavoidable, residents should reduce speed, increase following distance, and use headlights appropriately. It's crucial to give snowplows ample space and to avoid passing them. In case of skidding, ease off the gas and steer in the direction of the skid.

Sidewalks in South Orange must be cleared within 12 daylight hours after the snowfall ends for residential properties, and within 4 daylight hours for commercial properties. Ice that cannot be removed should be treated with salt or sand. Placing snow into roadways is prohibited and subject to enforcement. Residents are also required to clear at least 3 feet around fire hydrants to ensure they are accessible.

To stay informed, residents are encouraged to subscribe to local alerts and notifications. In emergency situations, dial 911. For non-emergency police matters, contact the Maplewood Police Department at 973-762-1234 or the South Orange Police Department at 973-763-3000.

Power outages can be reported to PSE&G by calling 1-800-436-7734 or by texting OUT to 4PSEG (47734). Residents should also monitor NJ Transit for any service advisories or schedule changes related to the storm.

Residents are urged to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to check on friends and neighbors, especially those who may need assistance during the storm. Staying informed and prepared is essential to ensure safety during this severe weather event.
