Winter storm updates for Maplewood And South Orange

Residents of  Maplewood and South Orange are bracing for a significant winter storm as a blizzard warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. on Monday. The National Weather Service forecasts snow accumulations between 17 and 22 inches, accompanied by wind gusts up to 50 mph. These conditions are expected to create whiteout scenarios, making travel extremely hazardous.

 

Governor Mikie Sherrill has declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay off the roads. A speed restriction of 35 miles per hour and a commercial vehicle ban, excluding the Turnpike, took effect at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Local officials emphasize the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm's peak.

 

The South Orange-Maplewood Public School District has announced closures for Monday, February 23. Administrators advise families to stay warm and limit travel. Both townships have issued updates regarding parking restrictions, snow removal, and potential power outages. Residents are encouraged to relocate vehicles to designated parking areas to facilitate snow plowing efforts.

 

The storm is part of a larger system affecting the East Coast, with blizzard warnings extending from Maryland to Massachusetts. Meteorologists attribute the severity to a stretched polar vortex influenced by Arctic warming and low sea ice levels.
