Youth community leadership making an impact in Maplewood Shout Outs

Jasmine Metellus is a dedicated community leader committed to empowering young individuals to engage actively in public life.

 

As President of the Essex County Young Democrats and Director of Outreach for Congresswoman Analilia Mejia, she channels her youthful energy into creating platforms for young people to connect, share ideas, and effect meaningful change.

 

Metellus focuses on issues impacting everyday citizens, particularly young adults striving for economic opportunities.

 

She identifies the rising costs of education, technological advancements, and job market challenges as significant hurdles.

 

Her mission is to bridge these gaps by connecting individuals with opportunities and fostering networks that support personal and professional growth.

 

Originally from Haiti and raised in Irvington, Metellus's interest in politics and public service developed during her time at Montclair State University.

 

Delivering a speech on student loan forgiveness and the challenges faced by marginalized communities in higher education ignited her passion for advocacy.

 

This experience led to a legislative internship, launching her career in public service.

 

Metellus is deeply concerned about the disconnect many young people feel toward politics.

A pivotal moment in Metellus's advocacy was during a strike at Delaney Hall.

 

She spent several days engaging with families, documenting events, and disseminating accurate information.

 

Reflecting on the experience, she stated, "I experienced how to fight for humanity, and most importantly, I grew my advocacy for everyone's rights."

She emphasizes that meaningful change requires preparation, persistence, and dedication.
