Columbia High School’s D Wing in Maplewood recently became a canvas for celebration and remembrance, as friends, family, and faculty unveiled a vibrant mural honoring Jonah Shimanoff, a gifted local artist who passed away at 17.

The mural, brought to life by Elijah Minton and the Mural Artist Collective (MAC), bursts with elements tied to Jonah’s passions—bold graffiti echoes of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, musical motifs referencing his love for heavy metal, and whimsical LEGO-inspired designs.

Project manager Eileen Cedrone and Jonah’s friend, Jonathan Cook, praised the mural for sparking inspiration and capturing Jonah’s enthusiasm for life.

Central in the artwork is the message “BE CREATIVE”—Jonah’s guiding mantra.

His parents, Geoff Patton and Eric Shimanoff, hope the mural and their new Kindness Project will empower the Maplewood community to carry forward Jonah’s legacy of empathy and connection.

Weekly Weather

Maplewood will see a mix of sunshine, warm temperatures, and a few chances for showers or thunderstorms this week. Thursday looks like the warmest day at 87°F, while Saturday should be one of the most pleasant days for outdoor plans. Forecasts can change, so residents should check again before heading out.

The South Orange-Maplewood community is making major strides in youth sports with the launch of SOMA Girls Lacrosse, now officially part of the South Orange Recreation Department.

This initiative cements a longstanding partnership, promising expanded access, lower costs, and a solid foundation for the future of girls' lacrosse in SOMA.

For more than 25 years, the Maplewood Girls Lacrosse Club has championed the sport locally, and will now transition to a booster role—driving fundraising and community support.

Registration opens June 17, 2026, offering “Little Laxers,” clinics, scrimmages, and goalie instruction for K-8 students, plus a fun-focused summer program.

Families will benefit from consistent, accessible programming, now enhanced with operational efficiencies and expanded outreach.

A dedicated committee will guide the transition, ensuring the program’s sustainability and growth.
